Falling eBook Brion Toss Reviews
- This is a succession of stories with a unified thread of reflection from someone whose vocation and profession includes the scaling of great heights. It’s a short book, the anecdotes are well-told, and the reflections are more fun than deep. A light read, very enjoyable.
- I work aloft on square-rigged sailing vessels. It's a relatively unforgiving environment and one in which things can go "all ahoo" quickly. I very much related to the situations described in this book and it gave me much to think about for the future. It is quite possible that this book could save someone's life. Who knows, it might even save my life. My one regret about the book was that I was done reading it far too quickly. Brion keeps a serious subject light and interesting and I wanted to keep on reading after I hit the end.
- I really enjoyed reading the new eBook "Falling" by Brion Toss. I was able to enjoy on several levels – as a rigger myself and as a skillfully crafted bit of rigger non-fiction storytelling.
One of my favorite chapters was ~ The Parable of the Parrel ~. Having been aloft when a fore yard parrel almost parted in high seas, I appreciated Brion’s description of corralling the yard and the calamity that follows. Even more, I enjoyed his logical drilling down to the real culprit…a rigger’s root cause analysis as to why the gear failed.
The real gem though in Brion’s eBook is distilling the act of going aloft into a series of tasks or an aloft checklist and vital for all who skip aloft to follow like pilots follow checklists before bounding down the runway.
I highly recommend this book for both the novice and practiced hand aboard any craft that one must work three or higher above decks. Brion's sage advice and witty prose is a welcome addition to the canon of seamanship. - Brion Toss is a true story teller. These harrowing tales of survival in the face of unfortunate events will be with me the rest of my days. I started reading it early in the evening, just one chapter I thought, for fun. But I could not put it down! Read it all in one sitting and had to consciously close my mouth, that was gaping open, by the end of the book!
- I can't say enough good things about this book, it's just awesome! I REALLY hope Brion writes another (longer one) with more climbing stories. As an arborist, I climb daily and can relate to many of the stories in Falling. Thank you Brion for providing us with such a thought provoking book.
- A good follow-on to his Apprentice book, with some interesting background detail on where the basis for much of his work originated.
- No this isn't a how-to-do-it book--its more of a how-not-to-do-it book (which in the world of climbing is at least as important body of knowledge). These tales from aloft are, at the same time, terrifying, funny and instructive. My favorite tale in this book was the story of "The Affelbach", which goes more to the heart of what it is that draws us to scale the heights that anything I've ever read. If your heart is drawn to the heights, your going to really fall for this book, pun intended.
- This is a wonderful read that should not be missed. You will feel the emotions involved with life and death experiences. You will laugh for days recalling Brion's unique and witty take on people and events. All of Brion's books are an experience you will enjoy for years. He makes learning a pleasure.
